A favourite of Madlib, it goes without saying that this is one magnificent record. Originally released on Vertigo in 1973, Labyrinth was the result of a commission from the Park Lane Group and funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. Originally a live performance by an augmented Nucleus, some of the expanded cast were brought back for the recording sessions, including vocalist Norma Winstone. Yesternow

A Tribute to Jack Johnson was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first african american heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself - who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks. The infectious boogaloo groove of Right Off has John Mclaughlin's crunching, wah-wah-driven power chords dancing fervently around the relentless backbeat of fender bassist Michael Henderson and drummer Billy Cobham. Gone are the trappings of bebop harmonies and modern jazz rhythms, save for Davis's dramatic solo, with its long, linear melodies and nasty blues inflections. The haunting, surreal Yesternow is an abstract update of the classic Miles / Gil Evans mood piece. The groove accrues momentum in a dreamy, backwards manner, keying off Henderson's hypnotic modal patterns and Mclaughlin's speech-like figures, culminating in an atonal distortion solo by free jazz pioneer Sonny Sharrock. In all, Jack Johnson packs a punch like nothing else in the trumpeter's canon, and continues to grow in stature and influence decades after its release.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0730/0956/1910/files/180968-miles-davis-a-tribute-to-jack-johnson.jpg?v=1683805707
nucleus-snakehips-etc-lp
Nucleus - Snakehips Etc (Vinyl LP)
Be With Records - BEWITH128LP

The distinctive rolling grooves, growling basslines and blasting horns of Snakehips Etcetera combined to present Nucleus's most energetic record. He was a true pioneer and saw the potential in fusing the worlds of jazz with rock, just as Miles Davis and The Tony Williams Lifetime did in the US. In late 1969, following the demise of the Rendell-Carr quintet, and tiring of British jazz, Carr assembled the legendary Nucleus. Regarding music as a continuous process, Nucleus refused to “recognise rigid boundaries” and worked on delivering what they saw as a “total musical experience”. We can get behind that.

Under bandleader Carr, Nucleus existed as a fluid line-up of inventive, skilled musicians. This constant evolution and revolution was all part of the continuous musical exploration and discovery that took jazz to new levels. And the music has kept relevant. It's perhaps not one for the jazz purists! It finds Nucleus pared down to a core group of six, with Carr, Bob Bertles (sax), Ken Shaw (guitar), Geoff Castle (keys), Roger Sutton (bass) and Roger Sellers (drums) comprising the collective. Snakehips Etcetera reflects a period where the compositions start to become a little more direct and less-cerebral in comparison to some of Nucleus' previous releases. And why would we begrudge them some fun? This one rocks, swings and funks with no little soul. And more than a little jazzy sleaze. Clearly, they were having a good time.

The album has a real live, jamming feel to it, no surprise given the extent to which they were touring at the time. The band is tight and grooving throughout, none more so than on Bob Bertles's effervescent opener, "Rat’s Bag". So darn funky it stings, it's an infectious gem full of punchy clean lines over a killer bassline from Sutton. The thick, driving jazz-rock of "Alive And Kicking" is exactly that. It has a very improvisational feel, but an inspired one at that and features a wailing guitar solo from Ken Shaw that simply slays. The funky "Rachel’s Tune" is amazing, bringing you back to Canterbury days with its fuzzed-out organ solos to close out Side A.

Opening up Side B, the cool psychedelic title track unfolds slowly and sensually over its ten-plus minutes. A stoned soul stew of sorts, each member of the crew gets their chance to shine over Sellers's steady drums. The melodic funk fusion of "Pussyfoot" pairs Carr with Bertles on ace solo flute for a bright, springy melody. This one really gleams over shuffling drums. Changing the pace to close out this memorable set, the particularly cool "Heyday" is a reflective, sober tune which reinforces the sumptuous Nucleus palette, the acoustic guitar and bass high in the mix to make the neck snap, the horns elegantly blasting to help you swoon.

This Be With edition of Snakehips Etcetera has been re-mastered from the original Vertigo master tapes, Simon Francis’ mastering working together with Cicely Balston's cut at AIR Studios to weave their usual magic with these wonderful recordings. Entrusting his own bass player with the limelight, Reid's unlikely A&R decision would typify his oblique strategies and challenge the common perception of a soloist within jazz's shifting landscape. Drawing few comparisons amongst independent label releases of the time, Wertman's only solo album combined frenetic bow work, intricate spiritual exchanges and raucous rock solid cyclic riffage to underpin his own compositional complexities. Providing a platform for first-time players like Richard Schatzberg (French horn) and future avant jazz punk participant Ken Simon (tenor/soprano sax) Kara Suite provides an early indication of Wertman's multilayered and non-conformist blueprint from which the hallowed New Life Trio would eventually illuminate. The album's off-kilter commitment is further cemented by the inclusion of worldly free jazz luminary Charles Tyler (alto sax) and the naturalistic back-beat of Steve Reid himself to complete the dream team -- albeit a sleepless one, on account of this one-off quintet's wide-eyed innovation.

Presented in four parts, Kara Suite documents Wertman's very first musical directorial commitment to vinyl, preceded only by guest appearances, months earlier, on Steve Reid's classic Rhythmatism and the ultra-rare The Universal Jazz Symphonette LP which chronicles Wertman's deep-end New York baptism alongside Billy Bang and Earl Freeman before his relocation to Northampton forged this unique and oblique chapter in America's independent jazz narrative. As one of the final pages to be turned in the Mustevic reappraisal legacy this album perhaps remains the best kept secret for aficionados who actively choose to blur the lines between spiritual jazz and free jazz with no discrimination against art rock and the genre that might soon be christened punk (but not as we know it). Finally resurrected via the Finders Keepers/Early Future unison, complete with full cooperation and sleeve note narration by David's partner Lynne Meryl, it might come as little surprise that amongst these pillars of alternative, privately pressed jazz is a story that also intertwines names such as Alice Cooper, Archie Shepp, Kiss, and DJ Shadow and many mutating musical genres that have made this music so hard to pin down over the subsequent five decades.

Presented on black wax with illustrated insert.

Tracklisting

Kara Suite
Sunshine
Sharatarr
Devotion

various-artists-j-jazz-vol-4-deep-modern-jazz-from-japan-nippon-columbia-1968-1981-180g-vinyl-3lp-pre-order
Various Artists - J Jazz Vol. 4: Deep Modern Jazz from Japan - Nippon Columbia 1968 -1981 (180g Vinyl 3LP)

This latest station stop off is with the famed Nippon Columbia label, one of the biggest labels in Japan, whose jazz output embraces every possible style imaginable. Their talents are complemented by a wide range of sound effects, from echo chambers to piped-in 9 applause to thunderstorms to fuzzy distortion, making for a dynamic and unique listening experience.

A1. We would do two or three pieces that were just strung together, one right after another for the whole concert, and we would make this wonderful, wonderful composition.” Jeremy Erwin has described the one-continuous-piece-of-music set they played in Vienna in October 1969 as “supremely weird” starting with “one of the more abstract versions” of Bitches Brew. Given that Miles was sharing the bill with Lionel Hampton and Duke Ellington as part of George Wein’s Newport Jazz Festival in Europe tour, it is perhaps not surprising that a large part of the 10 audience walked out during the first ten minutes. But those who remained went on to witness a shining Wayne Shorter quoting from Super Nova throughout on Agitation; a slow-burning, fifteen-minute version of Miles Runs The Voodoo Down, and a classic set-closer, I Fall in Love Too Easily/Sanctuary. In Erwin’s view “the bandleader knew that a dose of serenity was the only resolution to a set as batty as this one.” The ‘never-recorded Lost Quintet’ that toured Europe in October/November 1969 had spent the preceding August rehearsing and recording a new double LP set Bitches Brew, within a kind of rock big band lineup. But here there was no John McLaughlin on guitar; Wayne Shorter was on saxophones, Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes, Dave Holland on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. This Quintet did record for Columbia in November 1968, but the session was not issued until 1981 on the Directions album.

Side 1. 1. Bitches Brew. 2. Agitation Side 2. 1. The following song could only enhance this ambience, since that of Brazilian saxophonist, Nivaldo Ornelas, present on this opus with 2 titles taken from his album A Tarde (1983). On “Cactus”, Nivaldo is supported on keyboards by his friend Marcos Resende, both also known for their album on the MPBC series released by Phonogram-Polygram between 1978 and 1981, which has clearly been an inspiration for Charles Maurice in building this second edition.

We could continue telling stories and details about the others great tracks included in Fusion Global Sounds Vol.2, but we believe that the best way is to listen to it and pursue your trip through Fusion Jazz combined with Brazilian styles, including surprising stopover in Poland, or Netherlands.

A1 Lerma dela Cruz - Free

A2 Nivaldo Ornelas - Cactus

A3 Krystyna Prońko - Oto Przyczyna

A4 Bobby Martinez - Pendulum

B1 Tom Grant - Mystified

B2 Nivaldo Ornelas - Los Angeles

B3 Carlos Mendes - Oamoréomar

B4 Dana Kaproff - Brownstones

Released in 1977, Bennie Maupin’s second album as a leader, and first for Mercury puts his time as part of the Headhunters on full display. A new Metheny record could be almost anything as the only musician to have won twelve of his twenty Grammy awards in twelve different categories. His recent recording Road To The Sun caused a sensation in the classical music world for its intricate and emotionally satisfying chamber music compositions. At the same time, its immediate predecessor From This Place was Downbeat magazine’s Jazz Record of the Year as an expansive and timeless large-scale work.

So the announcement of a new Metheny record is always a noteworthy event. Once again, a surprise is in store for the legions of fans Metheny has collected across the globe.

On September 10th, 2021 Modern Recordings will release PAT METHENY SIDE-EYE - NYC, an exciting, vibrant and energized new platform for Metheny, showcased in a recording that features 30 minutes of intricate new music set alongside a few unexpected and creative re-workings of Metheny classics re-imagined.

So, what is Side-Eye?

Pat explains, “I wanted to create an ongoing platform to host a rotating cast of the newer generations of musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way. From my earliest days in Kansas City onward, I was the beneficiary of so many older musicians hiring me, which gave me a chance to develop through the prism of their experiences and the particular demands of what their music implied.”

He continues, “I have been feeling like I wanted to have a specific setting to focus on some of the younger NYC musicians I have enjoyed recently where there seems to be some kind of kinship happening. About every ten or twelve years, there seems to be a crop of players coming along who find a certain resonance with whatever it is that my thing seems to represent to them. The last time that happened was the Josh Redman, Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau, Antonio Sanchez generation, and it seems to be happening again now.”

“Just as it was back then, I have been hearing from these newer players on the scene when they get to town who get in touch to talk about the influence that some of my records and tunes have had on them. When there is time, I always try to invite them up to my house to do some playing. Very often, it’s a natural and organic thing for me to play with them; they have literally grown up listening to the recordings and playing those compositions from their beginnings, just as I did with many of the folks that I eventually wound up playing with too.”

“My good friend, the great drummer Eric Harland called me up one day to tell me about James Francies and how he wanted to get together with me. I suggested we get a bass player and have a session. Eric said, “You don’t need a bass player with James!”. That was an incredible day, and from that, the idea of building a first edition of the concept around James and his amazing talent was formed.”

Metheny has given this band concept the name Side-Eye and hopes that it might become a rotating group of musicians who could come and go in different combinations. So far, there have been four iterations, hence the V.1-IV sub-heading on the record.

“With James signed up, I wanted to dive into the amazing pool of talented drummers that the scene enjoys at the moment. Eric himself is incredible, and for a bunch of the first performances we did, I used Anwar Marshall, one of the best new Philly guys around. After that, Nate Smith did a tour in Japan with James and me that was fantastic, then on this recording, Marcus Gilmore is featured, who I have known since he was about 12 years old as the grandson of my number-one hero in life, the great Roy Haynes. For the next round of performances, I have invited Joe Dyson to join us. Joe is an incredible drummer, originally from New Orleans, who will bring a whole other set of possibilities in the future.”

As a musician who has presented himself onstage in such a wide range of settings, how does Metheny decide how to identify one aspect of his output from the next? Explains Metheny “Even from quite early on, I often had several different bands going on. That was almost unheard of back in the ’70s and ’80s - most people had their one band, and that was it. In fact, it may even be I got too good at branding these different things with their own distinctive names and mini-cultures. Really everything I do is “the Pat Metheny Group” no matter who in the band at the time or what I wind up calling it. It is all the same thing to me, and each setting I put together as a bandleader operates in the same basic way with me doing my best to put together and write music for the best combination of people I can to present whatever I am interested in at the time.”

Pat continues, “In recent years, with the newer kinds of musicians that are around these days, it is more likely that I can put together groups of musicians where nothing is mutually exclusive to anything else, The kinds of players that will fit into the profile of the Side-Eye thing will certainly have to have that kind of range. The constant factor for me as a leader from the beginning, regardless of who I invite along the way, is to draw on the strengths of the players I have with me at the time and to encourage everyone to do their best.”

On this recording, more than half of the program is devoted to new music. Metheny comments, “In some ways, this record is a bit like one of my earlier records, Travels, in that it happened to be recorded live, but also introduces a bunch of new music and new concepts.”

The record begins with a new nearly fourteen-minute long composition called “It Starts When We Disappear”, another in a long line of Metheny pieces that go far beyond the simple head/solo/head format into a complex extrapolation of the material while featuring jaw dropping solos from both Metheny and Francies.

“At its core, this is a kind of “organ trio”; but an organ-trio for the 21st century. James has the capacity to play bass lines with his left hand that rivals the great Jack McDuff, my favorite “bass player” of all the classic organ guys. But additionally, I can play bass from guitar now too. I wanted to push the whole idea of a keyboard/guitar/drums trio. I was interested to see what would happen if I got some of my orchestrionic instruments involved too, a whole other dimension of challenge to add to the equation. Those instruments are featured on the opening and closing tracks.”

But clearly, along the way, everything else is in there too, including a look a the organ trio in its most traditional way on the track “Timeline”, a piece Metheny wrote for a Michael Brecker album that featured both Metheny and the great drummer, Elvin Jones. “I had never done a version of that tune on my own, and with this band, it seemed like the perfect time.”

And on the track “Lodger,” we hear a version of Metheny that has not appeared since his recording of John Zorn’s TAP, or maybe even going back to The Roots of Coincidence - Metheny at his most rock. “I always let the tune decide how it wants to get played. When I wrote that one, it was actually on an acoustic guitar late at night. But in rehearsal, it demanded to get treated more in this way. The piece is dedicated to and inspired by a great friend of mine and one of my favorite guitar players, Adam Rogers.”

With Pat Metheny, you simply never know what is coming next. But among the many things that make this ever-changing artist so special is the astoundingly consistent level of commitment and quality that he brings to everything he does.

Whether searingly electric, powerfully intense or deeply contemplative, highly composed or totally improvised, or even with some new-fangled contraption of his own design, there is always that unmistakable Metheny sensibility at work that has stood at the forefront of jazz for what is now approaching five decades. This album confirms that Zawinul was the primary creative generator of Weather Report, the connecting link between the band and Miles Davis’s keyboard-laden experiments on "In A Silent Way"; indeed, the composition in its complex orchestral form as composed by Zawinul is newly arranged on this LP and creates its very own vision of this brilliant work.

The two keyboarders, with the formidable Herbie Hancock alongside Zawinul, constitute the fundament for this poised and exploratory album and embellish their work with the galactic sound effects created by Echoplex and ring modulator. The third founder of Weather Report, Miroslav Vitouš, is to be heard on the bass, and the hard bop of the trumpeter Woods Shaw proves that he is an absolute maestro when it comes to jazz rock. Earl Turbinton provides for the Wayne Shorter-like rays of light on the soprano saxophone, which Shorter himself then expresses on "Double Image". This work is the direct connection between Davis’s earlier electric recordings and Weather Report and constitutes the basis for almost all subsequent eclectic contemporary jazz projects: Miles Davis’s "In A Silent Way", the Weather Report album of the same name and this LP are an inseparable series of recordings, which document the origin of one of the most important and influential music trends of the 20th century.

Musicians: Joe Zawinul (p, el-p); Herbie Hancock (el-p); Wayne Shorter, Earl Turbinton (ss); Woody Shaw, Jimmy Owens (tp); Hubert Laws, George Davis (fl); Miroslav Vitouš, Walter Booker (b); Billy Hart, David Lee
Joe Chambers (perc); Jack DeJohnette (melodica, perc)

Track List:
1. Pianist Fred Hersch called “him the guitar whisperer,” whereas John Scofield has noted how he “got to play with [Mick], which was a valuable learning experience—not to mention fun. I love his ECM album ‘In Pas(s)ing’, a special piece of work which fully holds up to today’s listeners.” For ""In Pas(s)ing"", the guitarist who greatly contributed to Gary Burton’s successful run of recordings for ECM in the 70s was joined by an A-list group of accompanists with John Surman, mainly heard on baritone saxophone here, bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer-legend Jack DeJohnette. Joining in airy, lyrical harmony, the four improvisors deliver a quietly eruptive session, full of discrete interplay and secretly memorable melody. Melody Maker called Goodrick a “composer and leader who is content to allow his music to pirouette gracefully on the spot,” in their review of the album from 1979, expanding: “Of the current ECM-school guitarists, he seems to possess the best blend of traditional virtues with a modern conception. Fashionably unpushy, he nonetheless puts a signature on the music through his cool, singing amplified tone, firm but sparingly dealt backgrounds, and beautiful interplay with Surman.” Also commenting on the sidemen, the article continues, “this is, in any case, among the best recorded Surman in years. Naturally, Gomez and DeJohnette are vital to the record’s success – The momentum they provide is almost supernaturally discreet, but absolutely real.” The album was recorded at Talent Studio in Oslo, in November 1978 and produced by Manfred Eicher. Amandla — in approach, sound, and even title ("amandla" means power in Zulu and was the rallying cry of the South African anti-apartheid movement)—is the child to Tutu, with one notable exception. Whereas Tutu had been a variety pack of beats, melodies and textures, Miles' final collaboration with bassist/producer Marcus Miller holds together as a more consistent endeavor, the rhythmic influences (rock, go-go, zouk, funk, even old-school swing) flowing together into a more balanced, and satisfying whole.

"If I could have one album," Miller later told George Cole for his book Last Miles, "I would take the song 'Tutu' and put it at the front of Amandla and I think it would be a very good representation of where I started and what I wanted to achieve."

Much of it had to do with a more reductive approach than Tutu: allowing Miles' trumpet to glow brighter in the open space around him. The Washington Post, typical of the media reception, wrote: "This is the most successful Miller/Davis project yet, because there's more room for Davis' tender, personal solo voice on the trumpet to express itself and because Miller has learned to do more with less." Other critics, for much the same reason, were pleased to hear echoes from Miles' rich legacy. "From the perspective of his past, Amandla is the most traditional Miles Davis record in years," went the review in The Guardian. "The opening 'Catembe' would slot into a Miles Smiles or Nefertiti session."

Recorded in late 1988 and early 1989, Amandla featured a potpourri of musicians in Miles' circle at the time. Twenty years later, a boy who caught that impromptu performance has become a trumpeter, playing in juke joints that prefer loud, honky-tonk music. Leaving his hardscrabble life behind, he journeys to Paris to find Cross. They meet and jam, the crowd roars, credits roll.

Dingo was the film in which Miles chose to play himself. He had taken on small acting parts before—a pimp on the TV show Miami Vice and a street musician in the movie Scrooged—but this was his first major role. And he agreed to supply the music for the film as well.

The Dingo soundtrack was completed before filming started. Miles called an old friend, the veteran French composer Michel Legrand to help out. They had last worked together in 1958, resulting in the album Legrand Jazz. In 1990, the big question was if Miles would be willing to be true to the storyline: playing jazz in both a traditional and more contemporary approach. As Legrand recalled, "I asked him that on the first day, out at his Malibu home. He said, 'That's no problem, because the story begins a long time ago and I'll do what the script calls for…so he'd play a phrase and put it on paper…He was in great shape. Even if it was a very bright tempo, he played everything with such love."

The music backs up Legrand's words. "Concert on the Runway" swings with a hard-bop rhythmic stamp and a theme akin to "Milestones" from 1958. Many of the tracks sparkle with the combined lyricism of the two masters whether uptempo or down: listen to "Trumpet Cleaning" and "The Dream." "The Jam Session" is the funky payoff to the film, the live atmosphere and sudden re-appearance of Cross' trumpet adding to its climactic feel.

Dingo suffered from poor reviews and poorer box office. Looking back, one can surmise as to the reasons why Miles chose to involve himself with the film: perhaps the idea hit close to home of a youngster bitten by the music bug, searching for his hero—as Miles had done in 1944 when he arrived in New York City looking for Charlie Parker. Or perhaps the notion of Cross laying aside his trumpet then being re-inspired to pick it up again—as Miles had in 1981. Whatever the motivation, Miles played Cross to type—sullen, reclusive, tight-lipped—and Dingo featured the only big-screen role of his career.

Track List:

Side 1
1. The story takes place in Spain, and the director had already used tracks from Sketches of Spain as placeholders, hoping for jazz music with an Iberian flavor and a mournful edge. That the narrative unfolded with a mysterious, dream-like quality suggested Miles as well. Miles agreed to create the music for the movie and immediately asked Marcus Miller to help compose and produce.

Miles was no stranger to the world of film. In 1958, he had created the impromptu modal jams that became the soundtrack for Louis Malle's first feature—L'Ascenseur pour l'echafaud. His 1970 album Jack Johnson had originally been conceived as a score to a boxing documentary, and as recently as October 1986 had played on tracks for the film Street Smart.

As had taken place with Tutu, Miles looked to Miller—working with keyboardist/programmer Jason Miles—to compose and construct the various tracks, over which he blew his trumpet parts. Matching the music to the mood and tempo of the film's scenes lay on Miller's shoulders. The soundtrack came together in early 1987 in Los Angeles, Miller and Jason Miles working in North Hollywood, and Miles driving in from Malibu to play his parts. As on Tutu, Miller brought in a number of players to add solos and texture: guitarists John Scofield and Earl Klugh; flautist James Walker, and drummer Omar Hakim.

Siesta hit screens in November to scathing reviews bemoaning its self-conscious hipness and scrambled structure.
