Mickey Newbury’s 1973 album Heaven Help the Child finds the revered songwriter revisiting and reimagining highlights from his earlier catalogue, delivering what many consider the definitive versions of ‘Sweet Memories’, ‘Good Morning Dear’, ‘Sunshine’ and ‘San Francisco Mabel Joy’. Recorded at Cinderella Studios, as with the two albums before it, the record is frequently ranked alongside Looks Like Rain and Frisco Mabel Joy as one of Newbury’s finest works.

The album blends lush arrangements with Newbury’s singular lyrical voice, moving from the multi-generational storytelling of the title track to the spectral character portrait of ‘Cortelia Clark’ and the driving bluegrass of ‘Why You Been Gone So Long’. As AllMusic’s Thom Jurek put it, “for the third time in as many recording sessions, [he] had done the impossible, created a masterpiece, a work of perfection.”
