Moses Brown steps away from his Peace de Resistance alias with Stone Upon Stone, his first solo LP under his own name—a minimalist, quietly affecting instrumental work that blurs the line between soundtrack and memoir.

Conceived as a sonic reflection on the partial construction and dissolution of his childhood home, the album spans three decades (1993–2023), unfolding like a slow-motion memory in flux. Originally intended as a score for Wiesław Myśliwski’s novel of the same name—about a family's unfinished mausoleum—Brown instead reworked the project into something deeply personal, drawing parallels with his own family’s halted building project and his experience growing up amid its remains.

Built from layered Mellotron voices re-recorded to mimic a small chamber ensemble, the music drifts between the human and synthetic, conjuring a sense of memory’s unreliable architecture. The result sits somewhere between Philip Glass’s North Star, Mica Levi’s film scores, and the sparse emotional register of Kali Malone or Julius Eastman.

Stone Upon Stone is a lonely, layered soundtrack to a childhood house both real and imagined—an evocative piece that rewards repeated listening.
