Formed in the early 1980s Austin noise punk scene, Scratch Acid rejected hardcore’s loud, fast conventions, embracing a more experimental and art-driven sound. Before releasing their 1984 debut S/T EP, a cassette of the recording caught the attention of Touch and Go Records founder Corey Rusk, who immediately expressed interest in the band. However, Scratch Acid had already committed to Rabid Cat Records, which released both the EP and their sole full-length album, Just Keep Eating (1986). Known for their compelling live performances, the band’s unique sound spread through fanzines, college radio, and word-of-mouth as they toured the Midwest and East Coast. After 146 shows, the band disbanded following the release of their 1987 Berserker EP on Touch and Go Records. Despite their brief existence, Scratch Acid’s influence on alternative music remains undeniable, with many bands citing them as a major inspiration.
