Brand-new Maloya album by the "band family" led by singer Marie-Claude Lambert-Philéas from La Réunion - available as a CD in a digipack and as an LP on Ajabu!. Marie-Claude Lambert-Philéas is the daughter of the late music legend Gramoun Lélé, a legendary figure in Maloya - a style of music, song, and dance native to the island in the Indian Ocean. For the African slaves and their descendants, Maloya (meaning "to speak") was and remains an essential form of expression, with a cultural significance comparable to that of the Blues in the USA. Alongside Séga, Maloya is one of the island's dominant musical styles and has even been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. For Marie-Claude, this music is truly a family affair - her husband, siblings, cousins, and children all play in the large ensemble. Votia perform Maloya in its most powerful and fastest form, typical of the island's eastern region. Composed and sung in Malagasy and Creole, the music is shaped by polyphony and percussion, blending influences from Indian and African musical traditions. Votia stand for the preservation and remembrance of cultural heritage - especially for younger generations
