Founded in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1992, Bohren & der Club of Gore emerged from the German hardcore and metal scene – only to break away from it almost entirely, slowing their music to a near standstill and inventing a genre all their own. By combining jazzy, muted melancholy with the heaviness and menace of doom, they developed what would later achieve cult status as “Doom Jazz” or “Noir Jazz”: crystalline instrumental soundscapes built around mournful saxophone, ghostly Rhodes, brooding piano, deep double bass and the gentlest brushwork. Over more than three decades, and with a devoted international following, they have made the darkness of the early morning hours their trademark.

With “Patchouli Blue” (2020), the band drifts deeper into the early morning hours than ever before. Their eighth album is their most subtle and weightless yet: across a series of muted, slowly breathing pieces, Christoph Clöser's smoky saxophone and clarinet float above softly glowing Rhodes, Morten Gass' sparse piano and the deep, barely perceptible pulse of the bass. Where earlier records embraced a sense of menace, here the darkness becomes almost gentle – ambient, dreamlike and impossibly delicate, with every note dissolving into the surrounding silence. Nearly three decades into their unique career, Bohren sound completely at ease with their own nocturnal language, refining rather than reinventing – and doing so more beautifully than almost any other band. A masterclass in atmosphere and restraint, and an essential part of the Bohren catalogue for any discerning music collection.
