Founded in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1992, Bohren & der Club of Gore emerged from the German hardcore and metal scene – only to break away from it almost entirely, slowing their music to a near standstill and inventing a genre all their own. By combining jazzy, muted melancholy with the heaviness and menace of doom, they developed what would later achieve cult status as “Doom Jazz” or “Noir Jazz”: crystalline instrumental soundscapes built around mournful saxophone, ghostly Rhodes, brooding piano, deep double bass and the gentlest brushwork. Over more than three decades, and with a devoted international following, they have made the darkness of the early morning hours their trademark.

As the title suggests, “Piano Nights” (2014) gently brings the piano to the forefront of this world. On their seventh album, the band distils two decades of slow-motion Noir Jazz into something exceptionally sparse and delicate: Morten Gass' muted piano and Fender Rhodes drift over Christoph Clöser's smoky saxophone, brushed drums and deep, patient bass, with every note allowed to linger and dissolve into the darkness. More restrained and fragile than ever before, this is music of extraordinary stillness – melancholic, cinematic and quietly overwhelming, the sound of a band that has long since perfected its own genre and simply continues to explore its depths. A nocturnal masterclass in atmosphere and restraint – and an essential addition to any discerning music collection.
