Founded in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1992, Bohren & der Club of Gore emerged from the German hardcore and metal scene – only to break away from it almost entirely, slowing their music to a near standstill and inventing a genre all their own. By combining jazzy, muted melancholy with the heaviness and menace of doom, they developed what would later achieve cult status as “Doom Jazz” or “Noir Jazz”: crystalline instrumental soundscapes built around mournful saxophone, ghostly Rhodes, brooding piano, deep double bass and the gentlest brushwork. Over more than three decades, and with a devoted international following, they have made the darkness of the early morning hours their trademark.

With “Sunset Mission” (2000), their third album, this distinctive sound fully crystallised for the first time – regarded by many as their definitive masterpiece and the blueprint for everything that followed. Here, the band slows time to an almost complete standstill and places the saxophone of new member Christoph Clöser at the centre of their sound for the first time, making the jazz influence more explicit than ever before. Across nine tracks and just over 73 minutes, “Sunset Mission” sounds like the ultimate soundtrack to a film noir that was never made – dark, sparse, hypnotic and hauntingly beautiful. A timeless classic for the early morning hours and a cornerstone of any discerning music collection.
