Geinoh Yamashirogumi’s Ecophony Rinne is a pioneering 1986 work that merges ancient musical traditions with bold studio experimentation. Led by polymath Tsutomu Ōhashi, the collective’s cross-disciplinary members — from scientists to students — created a four-part “ecological music” symphony exploring humanity’s connection to nature.
The album layers Javanese Jegog percussion, Buddhist mantra, Tibetan horn textures, and global field recordings into a fluid orchestral suite shaped by ideas of life, death, and renewal. It also served as a testing ground for Ōhashi’s “Hypersonic Effect” theory, proposing that inaudible ultra-high frequencies meaningfully influence how we perceive sound.
Time Capsule’s half-speed-mastered edition, cut at Abbey Road by Miles Showell, is the first vinyl release designed to reproduce those frequencies, restoring the full physical impact of this extraordinary record. A precursor to the group’s work on Akira, Ecophony Rinne remains a visionary synthesis of culture, environment, and technology.
