To mark the 40th anniversary of Dense Band, Yatak Records is reissuing David Moss’s groundbreaking albums Dense Band (1985) and Full House (1984) in newly remastered editions. Together with avant-garde and Downtown scene icons such as Fred Frith, John Zorn, Arto Lindsay, Christian Marclay, Bill Laswell, and Wayne Horvitz, Moss created an uncompromising sound that bridges noise, improvisation, groove, and experimental song structures. Born in New York City, David Moss began his musical journey as a vocalist and percussionist before studying composition with Bill Dixon at Bennington College. He quickly established himself as an international performer and, by the mid-1970s, had become a key figure in both art rock and noise music. Combining live electronics, an idiosyncratic percussion setup, and highly theatrical vocal performances, Moss developed a singular artistic voice that defied categorization. After years immersed in New York’s Downtown improvisation scene, Moss felt it was time to form a band of his own - one with real grooves and songs that blurred the boundaries between noise and emotion. In other words, a noise band you could actually dance to. This vision led to the creation of the David Moss Dense Band in 1984. For the project, Moss invited the legendary guitarist, producer, and experimental polymath Fred Frith to contribute as producer, bassist, and guitarist. The recording sessions became an intense balance of surprise and control, where free improvisation merged seamlessly with studio wizardry. Moss found himself exploring new territory: singing at the forefront while drumming, collaborating with musicians eager to embrace sonic risk, and shaping a band sound that was at once rhythmically compelling, complex, and raw. The album has now been carefully remastered and reissued, for listeners discovering it for the first time, as well as those ready to experience it all over again
