Needle Mythology, the label founded by music writer and broadcaster Pete Paphides, presents a new edition of The Lilac Time’s acclaimed 1999 album Looking For A Day In The Night. Remastered at Abbey Road by Miles Showell, it features expanded artwork by James Gosling, liner notes from Caitlin Moran, and a printed inner sleeve with song lyrics.
Released eight years after the group’s 1991 masterpiece Astronauts, Looking For A Day In The Night marked the return of Stephen Duffy alongside Claire Worrall (soon to be Claire Duffy), Melvin Duffy on slide guitar, and the returning Nick Duffy, who contributes two instrumentals. The songs draw on the pastoral warmth and melodic grace first heard on the band’s 1987 debut, blending reflective storytelling with rich folk-rock textures.
Celebrated for its “flawless” musicianship and named one of The Times’ 100 Greatest Albums of the 2000s, the album remains a fan favourite. Robbie Williams became such an admirer that he invited Stephen Duffy to collaborate on his album Intensive Care and covered ‘The Family Coach’. This edition also includes contemporaneous B-sides and live recordings.
